Redefining the Conversation Around ADHD: How Dawn Brown is Helping Parents and Children
Texas psychiatrist Dawn Brown is providing both parents and children a much-needed demystification of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Brown's treatment plan of combining medication and behavioral management helps kids learn time management and other skills.
Having been diagnosed with ADHD at age 31, Brown is adamant that the disorder is predominantly genetic, and not caused by ‘bad’ parenting. In fact, ADHD is one of the most studied and misunderstood medical conditions.
To illustrate, Slater, a teacher with 27 students in her classroom at Uplift White Rock Hills Preparatory School, brings an open mind and an abundance of patience. Similarly, artist Jinks, who has no formal training beyond high school and junior college art classes, has developed a Sunday night tradition of dedicating two hours to each bag, drawing rap stars, NBA Legends, and cultural figures such as George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
In this way, Brown and others are helping to redefine the conversation around ADHD and shine a light on the importance of understanding and acceptance.
