US Stocks Close Mixed After Volatile Session; Tesla (TSLA) Up +3%
US stocks closed mixed on Friday after a volatile trading session amid weak earnings reports and a disappointing consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan.[0]
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7% to 33,699, while the broader S&P 500 declined 0.9% to 4,081.[1] The Nasdaq Composite, which is heavily invested in technology, fell 1.0% to close at 11[2]
The yield on 10-year Treasuries advanced six basis points to 3.67%.[3] West Texas Intermediate crude oil fell 1.1% to $77.63 a barrel.[4]
Tesla (TSLA) saw a 3% increase in its closing price due to indications that the recent price reductions are prompting customers to buy the firm's electric vehicles. The company shipped 66,051 cars from China in January, a month-on-month surge of 18.4%.[5]
Meanwhile, the University of Michigan released its preliminary measure of February consumer sentiment.[2] The data arrived at 66.4, surpassing the anticipated 65 figure.[6]
As of now, 63% of the S&P 500 corporations have revealed their fourth-quarter earnings.[7] Fundstrat reported that 68% of those companies had a median 6% increase in profit estimates, and 63% had a median 4% increase in revenue estimates.[8]
It was a week of losses for the major US indexes, with the S&P 500 suffering its first weekly loss in three weeks and notching its worst one-week decline since December.[9] The Nasdaq had the biggest drop of the week, declining by over 2%.[0]
Overall, the market remains volatile as investors continue to assess the strength of the economic recovery and focus on corporate earnings reports.
